What Is Crystal Healing? A Beginner’s Guide to Healing Crystals

If you’ve ever picked up a crystal and wondered what you’re actually supposed to do with it, you’re definitely not alone.
Maybe you’ve heard people talk about crystal healing, chakras and energy. Maybe you already own a few crystals but aren’t quite sure how to use them. Or perhaps you’re simply wondering:
What is crystal healing, and how do healing crystals actually work?
Crystals have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. My mum was a crystal healer back in the 1980s, long before crystals became something you could casually pick up alongside a candle and a houseplant.
One of the first crystals she gave me was an Amethyst cluster. More than 40 years later, it still sits beside my bed.
Today, I’m a Certified Crystal Healer with a Diploma in Crystal Healing and further training with the Crystal Mystery School. I use crystals both in my own spiritual practice and professionally through my work at Alviva Soul.
And my approach to crystal healing is pretty simple. I don’t believe you need hundreds of crystals, complicated rituals or a PhD in identifying sparkly rocks.
You need to understand why you’re working with a crystal and how to actually use it.
So if you’re curious about crystal healing, grab a cuppa and let’s start at the beginning.
What Is Crystal Healing?
Crystal healing is a complementary spiritual and wellbeing practice that uses crystals and stones as part of intentional, reflective and energetic practices.
Different crystals are traditionally associated with different energetic qualities. For example, Amethyst is commonly associated with calm, spiritual connection and intuition, while Rose Quartz is connected with love, compassion and emotional support.
Crystal healing can take many forms.
You might hold a crystal while meditating, carry one with you during the day, place crystals around your home, work with them during intention-setting or use them as part of chakra and energy practices.
You can also experience crystal healing with a trained practitioner, where crystals may be placed around or on the body as part of a structured crystal healing session.
For me, though, crystal healing isn’t about placing a pretty stone on the bedside table and expecting it to sort your life out.
Crystals are tools.
They can become physical anchors for intention, reflection and spiritual practice. They can help us create space to slow down, pay attention and become more aware of what is happening within us.
And ultimately, you are still part of the process. The crystal isn’t doing your life for you.
Annoying, I know. It would be considerably easier if Clear Quartz answered emails and Black Tourmaline dealt with difficult relatives

How Do Healing Crystals Work?
This is probably one of the biggest questions people have about crystal healing.
Within crystal healing traditions, crystals are understood to have their own energetic or vibrational qualities.
Practitioners may work with those qualities alongside the human energy system, including the chakras, intention and other forms of energy work.
For example, during chakra-based crystal healing, different crystals may be selected and placed around the body according to the energetic centre being worked with.
But there is an important distinction to make here. The energetic understanding of crystals belongs to spiritual and complementary healing traditions. There is currently no established scientific evidence showing that crystals can diagnose, treat or cure medical conditions.
That doesn’t mean you have to choose between being spiritual and being sensible.
I certainly don't.
I can work deeply with crystals, Reiki, meditation, chakras and energy while also going to my doctor when something is medically wrong. The two don't need to be enemies.
For me, crystal healing is about creating an intentional space where we can slow down, connect with ourselves, explore what we’re experiencing and work with crystals as part of that process.
How to Use Crystals for Healing
One of the things I love about crystal healing is that it doesn't have to be complicated.
If you're wondering how to use crystals for healing, there are plenty of simple ways to begin.
You can hold a crystal during meditation and focus on its weight, temperature and texture while you breathe.
You might carry a crystal in your pocket as a physical reminder of an intention you've set for yourself.
You can place crystals somewhere meaningful in your home or workspace.
You might work with a particular crystal during journaling, Reiki, breathwork or another spiritual practice.
Crystals can also be used within chakra work, where stones are selected according to the energy, emotions or themes associated with individual chakras.
And sometimes you can simply sit quietly with a crystal.
No elaborate ceremony required.
I often choose crystals according to what is happening in my actual life.
If my mind is racing, I might reach for Amethyst.
If I'm being particularly hard on myself, Rose Quartz often finds its way into my pocket.
If I need clarity and can't see the next step for all the mental noise, Clear Quartz is one of my favourites.
I've worked with those three crystals for years, and they're also the stones I return to when I'm feeling overwhelmed or scattered.
The important part isn't collecting as many crystals as possible.
It's developing a relationship with the ones you have and actually using them.

What Are the Benefits of Crystal Healing?
People are drawn to crystal healing for all sorts of reasons. Some use crystals as part of meditation or spiritual practice. Others enjoy having something tangible to hold while setting an intention or taking a quiet moment for themselves.
People may choose crystal healing as a complementary wellbeing practice to support experiences such as:
relaxation and intentional rest
meditation and mindfulness
emotional reflection
spiritual exploration
intention-setting
greater awareness of thoughts and feelings
creating meaningful rituals and moments of pause
For me, one of the biggest benefits of crystal healing is that crystals give us something physical to work with. We're not simply thinking about an intention. We can hold something in our hand while we consider it. We can place a crystal somewhere we'll see it. We can return to it during meditation or reflection.
That can make a practice feel much more tangible.
And sometimes that's exactly what we need.

Crystal Healing for Beginners: Where Should You Start?
If you're completely new to crystal healing for beginners, my first piece of advice is this:
Don't buy everything.
Seriously.
Crystal shops are dangerous places when you've discovered you like shiny rocks. Ask me how I know.
You don't need 47 different crystals before you're officially allowed to start.
Choose one or two and get to know them.
Three accessible crystals I often recommend exploring are:
Amethyst: Traditionally associated with calm, intuition and spiritual connection. I personally use Amethyst frequently during meditation and when I want to create a quieter, more reflective space.
Rose Quartz: Commonly associated with love, compassion and emotional support. I work with Rose Quartz particularly around self-compassion and kindness towards myself.
Clear Quartz: Often called the Master Healer within crystal traditions and commonly used for clarity, intention and amplification. It's one of the crystals I regularly use during meditation and intention-setting.
Once you've chosen a crystal, spend some time with it.
Hold it.
Meditate with it.
Learn about its traditional associations.
Notice how you experience working with it.
Your relationship with a crystal matters far more than memorising a giant list of meanings.
What Happens During a Crystal Healing Session?
A professional crystal healing session goes considerably deeper than choosing a nice crystal and lying down beside it.
Every practitioner will work differently, so it's worth asking what their particular approach involves.
My own crystal healing sessions begin with the person in front of me.
Before reaching for crystals, I want to understand what has brought you to the session and what is happening for you physically, emotionally, energetically and spiritually.
From there, I choose the crystals and approach according to what we're working with.
Chakra balancing forms part of my crystal healing work, but a session can also explore emotional or energetic themes that have emerged during our conversation.
Depending on the session, I may incorporate meditation, visualisation, energy work and Reiki alongside the crystals.
Sometimes the work is simply allowing yourself to stop, be supported and experience the session without needing to do anything.
And no two sessions need to look exactly the same.
That's one of the things I love about this work.
How Do You Choose a Crystal Healer?
If you'd like to experience crystal healing professionally, don't be afraid to ask questions.
Look at the practitioner's training and experience. Read about how they actually work.
Check whether they explain their approach clearly and whether their boundaries feel responsible.
A crystal healer shouldn't be diagnosing medical conditions, telling you to stop medication or promising that a particular crystal will cure an illness.
Crystal healing is complementary.
It doesn't replace qualified medical or psychological care.
I'd also pay attention to something less measurable:
Do you feel comfortable with this person?
Crystal healing can be deeply personal work. You may be talking about emotions, experiences or areas of your life that feel vulnerable.
Qualifications matter. But so does feeling that you're working with someone who will listen to you, respect your boundaries and create a supportive space for the session.
Do You Need to Believe in Crystal Healing?
I don't think you need to arrive with absolute certainty. Curiosity is enough. You can explore crystal healing without deciding that every spiritual belief you've ever encountered must suddenly become true.
Work with a crystal.
Meditate with it.
Learn about it.
Notice what happens for you.
Keep what feels meaningful.
Question things.
Stay curious.
Personally, I think spirituality becomes much more interesting when we're allowed to explore rather than being told exactly what we're supposed to believe.

A Note About Crystal Healing
Crystal healing is a complementary spiritual and wellbeing practice. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent medical or mental health conditions and should not replace advice, diagnosis or treatment from a qualified healthcare professional.
Individual experiences with crystals, Reiki and other energy practices vary. If you have concerns about your physical or mental health, please seek advice from an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
